Chlamydomonas reinhardtii (Green algae)

About the genome:

Overview

Chlamydomonas reinhardtii is a single celled green alga, belonging to the chlorophytes, a group of highly adaptable species that live in many different environments throughout the world. Normally C. reinhardtii derives energy from photosynthesis, but thrives in total darkness when provided with an alternative carbon source.

Its impressive adaptability and quick generation time has made Chlamydomonas an important model for biological research. Over the years, studies of Chlamydomonas have provided major research contributions in the areas of photosynthesis, ciliary diseases and molecular biology.

Statistics

This release of Phytozome features the v4.3 release of Chlamydomonas annotations, which includes the Augustus update 10.2 (u10.2) annotation of JGI assembly v4. This set of gene predictions incorporates new data from 4 runs of transcript sequence from pooled samples from a wide range of conditions sequenced at the JGI on the 454 Titanium platform, generating 5,375,266 reads. These reads have been deposited in the GenBank Sequence Read Archive (SRA) under accession SRA020135. Data from 4 runs of transcript sequence from Genoscope on the Roche-454 platform were also incorporated into the gene models. These new data have led to modification of the predicted protein sequence for 8,350 gene models.
Genome
Approximately 112 Mb arranged in 17 linkage groups and 61 additional scaffolds, with an L50 of 6.6 Mb.
Loci
17,114 loci containing protein-coding transcripts
Transcripts
17,114 protein-coding transcripts

Future Plans

The next release (Chlamydomonas v4.4, scheduled for summer 2011) will be based on Augustus u10.3 annotations. These will include new data from JGI sequencing of mRNAs mRNAs isolated from Chlamydomonas cells under nitrogen starvation on the Roche-454 Titanium platform as well as RNA-Seq data obtained on the Solexa platform.
